My brooch or pin regularly turns upside down – how do I prevent this?

Why does your brooch or pin keep spinning?

A brooch or pin that spins, tilts, or hangs forward while you wear it: it’s a recognizable problem. Especially small pins with a single pin post and larger asymmetrical brooches can slowly shift position due to movement or gravity.

Fortunately, this usually does not mean there is anything wrong with your accessory. The cause often lies in the combination of the design, the fabric, the spot where you wear the pin, and the tightness of the clasp. With a few simple adjustments, your brooch or pin will stay in place better.

In short

  • Choose a sturdy spot on your clothing.
  • Check that the clasp is fastened securely.
  • Provide extra support for thin fabric.
  • Consider the weight and balance of the design.
  • A small piece of a cotton pad or felt can reduce spinning.

Why does a brooch or pin spin?

A pin can shift position for various reasons. Usually, multiple factors play a role at once.

Single attachment point

A pin with a single post can rotate around that one point. On a round or symmetrical design, this is less noticeable than on an elongated or asymmetrical shape.

A flexible fabric

Thin or stretchy fabric moves easily. As a result, the pin receives less support and can tilt or hang forward.

Weight and balance

If a design is heavier on one side, gravity pulls that part downward. This is especially relevant for larger or elongated designs.

A loose clasp

A worn or loose clasp clamps the pin less firmly against the fabric. This creates extra space for it to move.

1. Choose a sturdy spot on your clothing

The place where you wear a brooch or pin makes a big difference. On a sturdy surface, an accessory usually stays more stable than on a thin or flexible part of your clothing.

Good spots include, for example, the lapel of a blazer, the chest of a jacket, a stiff collar, a thickly knitted part of a sweater, or the edge of a bag. Avoid spots that move a lot or where a bag strap, coat, or seatbelt constantly rubs against it.

2. Use the cotton pad trick

A small piece of a cotton pad can reinforce the fabric on the back and fill the gap between the fabric and the clasp.

  1. Cut a small piece from a clean cotton pad.
  2. First, push the pin post through your clothing.
  3. Place the piece of cotton pad over the post on the inside.
  4. Then, press the clasp on firmly.

The cotton pad provides extra grip and support, making the pin less likely to spin or tilt forward. A small piece of felt can work in the same way.

Use only a small piece of material. The pin post must still fit deep enough into the clasp to remain securely fastened.

On a sturdy jacket, a pin gets more support and remains in the desired position more easily.

3. Check the clasp

A rubber or metal clasp can become looser after frequent use. This means the pin is clamped less securely against the fabric and can move more easily.

Check that the clasp is pushed all the way onto the post and does not come off on its own. Does it feel worn or loose? If so, replace it with a new clasp. Always keep a few spares in a set location.

4. Consider the shape of the pin

Round and symmetrical pins look visually the same even if they spin slightly. With a heart, lightning bolt, or elongated design, a slight change in position is more noticeable.

Therefore, preferably place an asymmetrical pin on a sturdy surface and use extra support on the inside of your clothing if necessary.

5. Choose a lighter pin for flexible fabrics

The heavier the accessory, the more it pulls on the fabric. On a thin blouse or flexible cardigan, a large brooch can therefore hang or spin faster.

Preferably choose a small pin for lighter clothing. Keep in mind that every pin with a post goes through the fabric. For silk, satin, and other delicate fabrics, a magnetic attachment might be a better choice.

A magnetic alternative without a pin

Don't want to poke a pin through your clothing? Wearable Wall Art can be worn on your clothing using the separately available Magnetic Brooch Cover. You place the cover on the inside of your clothing and the WWA piece on the outside.

The magnetic attachment does not go through the fabric. Here, too, a sturdy surface provides the design with the best support. On very thin fabric, a larger design might hang forward due to its weight.

The Magnetic Brooch Cover is not included as standard. One cover can, however, be used for different Wearable Wall Art designs.

What should you avoid using?

Double-sided tape might seem like a simple solution, but it is not suitable for every garment or accessory. The adhesive can leave residue, damage delicate fabrics, or affect the finish of the accessory.

Therefore, it is better to use a sturdy clasp, a piece of fabric, felt, or a cotton pad for support, or opt for a magnetic attachment.

Frequently asked questions about spinning brooches and pins

Why does a pin with a single post spin?

The post acts as a single central pivot point. Due to movement, gravity, and flexible fabric, the pin can slowly rotate around that point.

How do I make my pin sit straighter?

Wear the pin on a sturdy spot, check the clasp, and optionally use a small piece of a cotton pad or felt on the inside for extra support.

Can I replace a loose clasp?

Yes. If a rubber or metal clasp no longer clamps securely, you can replace it. Check beforehand that the new clasp fits the pin post properly.

Does a magnetic closure help against spinning?

A magnetic attachment distributes support differently than a single pin post. However, the sturdiness of the fabric, the strength of the magnets, and the balance of the design remain important.

Can a spinning pin damage my clothing?

A lot of movement can enlarge the hole around the post, especially in thin or delicate fabrics. Therefore, choose a sturdy surface and prevent the pin from constantly rubbing against a bag strap or jacket.
